The two hecklers in "The Muppet Show" first appeared as a pair in the 1975 pilot "The Muppet Show: Sex and Violence". The two characters were named after two New York City hotels, the Statler Hotel (the hotel was renamed the Hotel Pennsylvania in 1992) and the Waldorf Astoria Hotel.

Statler and Waldorf share the stage left balcony box in the Muppet Theatre and have a passion for heckling. They delight in heckling all aspects of the Muppet Show, especially "Fozzie Bear".

To distinguish between the two, Waldorf has a rounder face, white hair, and moustache. Though fans and pop culture on occasions referred to them simply as the "two old guys on the balcony".

Some of the quotes by Statler and Waldorf are:

Statler: The internet is a completely different culture isn't it.

Waldorf: You said it. Everything here is immediately followed by sarcastic comments and nasty responses.

Statler: Yep we're finally where we belong.

Both: Do-ho-ho-ho-hoh!

Waldorf: "You know the second half of this show reminds me of Aspen".

Statler: Why Aspen?

Waldorf: Cause it's all downhill from here.

Statler: "What's wrong with you?

Waldorf: It's either this show or indigestion. I hope it's indigestion.

Statler: Why?

Waldorf: It'll get better in a little while".
