What began 24 Jan 1848 thanks to John Marshall at Sutters mill?
John (a carpenter and a sawmill operator) was carrying out his ordinary inspection on the 24th of January, 1848 when he suddenly made a great discovery that would change the American history for good. John saw a gleam in the bottom of a ditch which appeared to be the glitter of gold! John determined the authenticity of his find on an anvil and comparing the flakes with a $5 gold piece. Then he reported the finding of gold but, neither he nor the owner of the mill ever profited from this miraculous find.

RivalDaughter, I notice "James Wilson Marshall" in another reply. I myself thought of the John Marshall who became chief justice, but I can eliminate him because he died in 1835,

John didn't make no money from his discovery . Only Christopher Columbus made money from discoveries/stealing

My Grandfather was a gold miner. Owned a gold mine. I know where it is, know where there's a "pocket" of gold inside. My uncle told me where it's located. If I could afford to get it out, I might be rich. Wouldn't that be nice?
