What company once sold the "Datsun" line of automobiles?

Datsun is an automobile brand owned by Nissan. In 1931, Dat Motorcar Co. chose to name its new small car "Datson", a name which indicated the new car's smaller size when compared to the DAT's larger vehicle already in production. When Nissan took control of DAT in 1934, the name "Datson" was changed to "Datsun", because "son" also means "loss" in Japanese and also to honor the sun depicted in the national flag. In 1986, Nissan phased out the Datsun name but re-launched it in 2013 as the brand for low-cost vehicles manufactured for emerging markets. The Datsun name is most famous for the 510, Fairlady roadsters, and later the Fairlady (240Z) coupes.

Christopher Skinner, You have no idea what you're talking about. The "U" was NOT "removed" in the USA from words such as behaviour. Standardized spelling developed simultaneously, but independently in the US and England. Such spelling differences are not considered misspellings. Both spellings are correct and accepted on an equal basis, except by those uneducated enough to be unaware of such things. I believe the word "chauvinistic" is appropriate to describe your pedantic, however misinformed, opinion. By the way, Americans do NOT say "NIS AWN." It is pronounced "Nee-sahn" in the states. Your comments are as inappropriate concerning the US as I would be if I thought all Australians throw "shrimp on the barbie" or thought that "Foster's is Australian for beer."

billyboy915, actually, Daniel Webster went out of his way to remove the extraneous "U" to deliberately change US spellings. Also, we've drifted away from the original pronunciation of words, as most living languages tend to do. Try some old English words sometime.
