The question asked "which of the following countries" and only one on the list is correct. I am not sure why people are confused.

The new Turkish Republic was keen to standardize things, so from 1923 only İstanbul was used and all forms of the older name and nicknames were dropped. By the way, your phrase, "their own selves", is very bad grammar. The word you're looking for is "themselves".

The question doesn't imply the answer is the only country, just which of the ones listed is part of two continents.

The question is not ambiguous in the slightest. It is crystal clear. It says “which OF THE FOLLOWING COUNTRIES is located in two continents?” Panama is not on the list and neither is Russia. Therefore they are both wrong answers.

Sultana Frazis, Constantinople wasn't sacrificed. It withstood assaults by the Ottomans for many years. It finally succumbed in 1453 after a siege. The Ottomans entered Europe and attempted to continue their conquest until they were defeated at The Battle of Vienna in 1683. They were pushed out of Europe except for the toehold around Constantinople/Istanbul only in the early 20th century when the Balkan nations finally cast off the Ottoman yoke. Hundred of thousands, if not millions died during this time. Nothing was sacrificed.
