What do herons mostly feed on?
The herons and bitterns are carnivorous. The members of this family are mostly associated with wetlands and water, and feed on a variety of live aquatic prey.

People with ponds in their gardens are very aware of a heron's diet.

"The diet of the green heron consists mainly of small fish. They will also eat various crustaceans, insects, tadpoles, frogs, snails and worms. Green herons eat small rodents and snakes as well. They are opportunistic and therefore will take advantage of what prey items are available."
