What does 4WD stand for?
Four-wheel drive, also called 4x4 ("four by four") or 4WD, refers to a two-axled vehicle drivetrain capable of providing torque to all of its wheels simultaneously. It may be full-time or on-demand, and is typically linked via a transfer case providing an additional output drive shaft and, in many instances, additional gear ranges.
A four-wheel drive vehicle with torque supplied to both axles is described as "all-wheel drive" (AWD). However, "four-wheel drive" typically refers to a set of specific components and functions, and intended off-road application, which generally complies with modern use of the terminology.

The first four wheel drive car was made in 1903 by Dutch Jacobus and Hendrik-Jan Spijker.

Was introduce as a off road vehicle, to go places that is hard for a normal car to go, it certainly wasn't meant to be driven around the city streets to do your grocery shopping and the like, but then I guess it makes people feel more tougher in a 4wd

4wd will take you places that an awd can't. My Trailblazer has both options. AWD is mostly for driving on paved roads.

At first I thought this was a DUH question, but after reading the very informative write up, I realized even though I knew the answer easily, there were things about the answer I didn't know and there are probably many who don't know as much about vehicles as I do so this wasn't as much of a DUH question as I presumed. Very well done.
