What does "AU" stand for on the periodic table?

AU on the periodic table represents gold, one of the densest and heaviest metals found on the periodic table next to platinum and tungsten. Lead has a similar density to gold but silver is by far lighter and aluminum is light and becomes incredibly effective for engineering when turned into an alloy.

The answer should at least mention the origin of the term originally used, Aurum as the reason that Gold has that designation.
