The famous G stands for Green Bay. Prior to Super Bowl XLV, former NFL running back Tiki Barber concocted a story on media day about how the G stood for greatness. Many people believed in that! Although completely unfounded, the story spread like wildfire over the internet.

Concerning the G on the Packers' helmet, in the 1960 NFL championship against Philadelphia the well-known symbol was not on the helmet. There was no G on the Packers’ helmet until 1961. The Packers wore it for the first time in their annual intra-squad game, played on the 5th of August, 1961, at City Stadium. It was created by equipment manager George Braisher and first sketched by John Gordon. The Packers then sought and obtained a trademark on the logo.

The original G was shaped like a football, and the Packers wore it when they won all five of their NFL titles under Lombardi. The current G is an oval.It is hard to know when the first change to the G first occurred. The new symbol was probably phased in. A change (or at least the first change) was made prior to the 1970 season. At the time, every player was issued a new helmet each year.
