The Greatest Show on Earth is a Technicolor drama motion picture filmed in 1952. It tells a story of the largest railroad circus in the world, its staff and their problems. Among such actors as Betty Hutton, Cornel Wilde and Charlton Heston, who portrayed the leading characters, James Stewart also took part in the creation of the movie, playing a supporting role of a mysterious clown, who spent the entire film in his make-up. Even when Stewart's characters appears in between shows scenes, his face is painted.

The film won two Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Story, and was nominated for Best Costume Design, Best Director, and Best Film Editing. It also won Golden Globe Awards for Best Cinematography, Best Director, and Best Motion Picture - Drama.
