In the history of professional hockey, and according to many sportswriters, players, and the National Hockey League (NHL) itself, there has never been a greater player than Wayne Douglas Gretzky (born January 26, 1961). The man with a record 894 in 1,485 games wore one number for his entire NHL career: 99.

Gretzky donned 99 in Edmonton, where he began his career and led a legendary Oilers dynasty to four straight Stanley Cups. When a shocking trade sent him to the Los Angeles Kings, Gretzky kept number 99.

Ditto for his brief stint with the St. Louis Blues and his final years in the league with the New York Rangers. Gretzky played in the NHL from 1979 until 1999.

In 2000, Wayne's jersey number was officially retired by the entire NHL league.
