Dicentra is called a bleeding heart in English, a broken heart in Russian, Jannetta's heart in French, a flower of the heart in German… All these names reflect an unusual shape of the flower – it resembles a small pink or red heart split into two halves. Unpretentious Dicentra can decorate any flowerbed with its delicate blossoms and carved tender fern-like leaves.

The flower came to Europe from Japan as far back as the beginning of the 19th century. The genus of Dicentra includes about 20 species of annual and perennial herbs which may be found in damp mountainous or sylvan areas across North America and East Asia.
