What is a mahout?
A mahout is an elephant rider, trainer, or keeper. Usually, a mahout starts as a boy in the 'family profession' when he is assigned an elephant early in its life. They remain bonded to each other throughout their lives.

This activity should not exist anymore. Training of the gentle elephants is not kind and their 'bond' is based on terror and inflicting pain. This is animal cruelty at its best, it should be stopped worldwide, wherever animals of any kind are 'trained' for human pleasure/use.

Looks after?? Every mahout is cruel. The "breaking in" of elephants to become slaves is deplorable and despicable.

Saw a documentary where the elephant turned on his trainer. Not a pretty sight.

Jeff Leonard, the elephants used for tourist rides are not. They are slaves beaten into submission and poorly treated. They are not meant to be caged or ridden and used for human entertainment.
