What is a Temazcal?

Have you ever heard of the "temazcal" phenomenon? It's still used in some areas of Mexico and even in Central America. Since the ancient time, people have been visiting temazkal in order to purify their souls and bodies. Actually, people made it cross-functional: it was a shrine and a place for the sick and for pregnant women. Priests were looking for the vision quests inside. The place was considered sacred and vivifying.

I have actually done this once. Here in Oklahoma, it is simply called a "Sweat Lodge" and the structure is made of buffalo hide and bones.

I did it was I was miserable and soaking wet coming out of it ..I kept having to take my full skirt using it as a mask because my lungs felt like they were on fire.. Maybe. It was a warning about my lungs issues as no one else seemed that miserable.. I was showing signs of asthma and chemical allergies but not this mess today...
