This stone monument of triangular pyramid shape is one of the most visited tourist destinations of Japan. It is located on Cape Sōya, and the inscription on it means "The monument at the northern end of Japan".

Cape Sōya is the northernmost point of the main island of Hokkaido. It is a part pf the city of Wakkanai, which is the northernmost urban community of the city. Anyway, very few people live here, as the temperatures here are the lowest of any other Japanese place. Climate is especially tough during winters.

Since the cape is just 43 km away across La Perouse Strait from Cape Crillon, Sakhalin Island, Russia, it is possible to catch a glimpse of the island of Sakhalin on a clear day.
