What is First Aid?
First Aid is the temporary immediate help given to the casualty due to an accident, choking, a heart attack, allergies or other medical emergencies on the spot using whatever materials available before professional medical treatment can be provided. This timely assistance, comprising of simple medical techniques, is most critical to the victims and is, often, life saving. Any layperson can be trained to administer First Aid, which can be carried out using minimal equipments.
It includes performing cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) while awaiting an ambulance, as well as complete treatment of minor conditions, such as applying a plaster to a cut. There are many situations which may require First Aid, and many countries have legislation, regulation, or guidance which specifies a minimum level of First Aid provision in certain circumstances. This include specific training or equipment to be available in the workplace ( such as Automated External Defibrillator), the provision of specialist First Aid cover at public gatherings, or mandatory First Aid training within schools.
First Aid, however, does not necessarily require any particular equipment or prior knowledge, and can involve improvisation with materials available at the time, often by untrained persons. First Aid can be performed on all animals.
