The public holiday has been celebrated since 1866.

Since 2001, Belgian authorities hold a ceremony in honor of the King. The ceremony is held in the presence of members of the Royal Family and other dignitaries. It is an interesting fact that the King and the Queen do not attend the ceremony as the custom says they shouldn't be seen celebrating themselves. That's why other members of the Royal family attend the ceremony instead.
