What is the Ballon d'Or?
Presented by France Football, the Ballon d'Or is a 65-year-old footballing (soccer) tradition. The best footballers of each year gather in Paris to determine the best of the best for that year. The record winner is Lionel Messi (6 times). He is also the current holder (as of Nov. 2021) due to the award not being given in 2020 because of COVID-19. The record nominees are Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi (both on 12 nominations).

The only times i'd come across the word d'Or was in association with awards so figured it must be an award.
