Incandescent light bulbs consist of an air-tight glass enclosure (the envelope, or bulb) with a filament of tungsten wire inside the bulb, through which an electric current is passed.

This bulbs as a type of lighting remain popular for home use, even if they are quite inefficient. They are cheap, come in different sizes, turn on immediately and create warm light. Besides all the advantages, such bulbs are quite expensive to operate, that's why compact fluorescent lamps and light-emitting diodes are becoming more and more popular nowadays.
