The centre of Sydney lies at 33 degrees 51 minutes south of the equator. The northern tip of New Zealand lies 34 degrees 38 minutes south. If a line is drawn due east from Sydney it would pass 90 km to the north of North Cape in New Zealand.

Tonga and Peru are both north of Sydney by latitude. 21 degrees and 18 degrees respectively.

Heading east, the 33 degree 51 minute line would make its first landfall near Navidad in Chile which is just south of Santiago.

There is a small cluster of islands called the Three Kings islands north of North Cape. They are owned by New Zealand but are not inhabited. These lie 34 degrees 13 minutes south so are still over 50 km south of central Sydney.
