Bavaria is a federal state of Germany. In the southeast of the country with an area of 70,548 square kilometers (27,200 sq mi), it is the largest state, making up almost a fifth of the total land area of Germany, and, with 12.6 million inhabitants, Germany's second most populous state. Munich, Bavaria's capital and largest city, is the third largest city in Germany.

The history of Bavaria stretches from its earliest settlement and formation as a duchy in the 6th century CE (AD) through the Holy Roman Empire to becoming an independent kingdom and finally a state of the Federal Republic of Germany.

I was TDY in Garmich, Bavaria. I was a member of the Army Ski Patrol. It’s not tough duty . . . but it’s tough duty to get. Actually I don’t think this. “State of Never-Neverland” exists anymore”. I was stationed there from 1972 to1975. Pink Floyd was touring. They were play “Dark Side of the Moon”. That’s where I think my APO was . . . ?

Dad was stationed to a little town called Bad Kissingen in Bavaria from '66-'68 when I was in High School, so I commuted via bus to Wurzburg American High School. My sister attended the Jr. High in Schweinfurt. The Vietnam War interrupted my plans to graduate HS there (class of 1969) and after a shortened tour, we were sent back to Ft. Lewis, Wa. right back to where we'd come from. I loved Germany as a kid, and revisited in 2015, back to Neuschwanstein, where as a 7 year old I had gotten to drive the horse carriage up to the castle, when Dad was stationed in Hanau (Hesse) in the mid/ late 50s. Military brats get a mixed bag growing up, but the travel could not be beat back then.

Toured that part of DE in the spring of 2011. Absolutely stunning scenery throughout that region. I look forward to a time that I may be fortunate enough to return.
