What is the name of the nearest star to our solar system?
This "tiny" star is a representative of the red dwarf group so it's obviously smaller than our Sun. According to the scientific data, red dwarfs are known as relatively cool and dim stars, in comparison with their big brothers. But still this type of stars is really widespread in our galaxy. So it's no wonder that one of those small buddies happens to be the nearest star body to our planetary system.
What are your thoughts on this subject?

It is actually alpha centuri if you base it on distance from our sun.... not sure where this answer came from

By no means am I atheist or an agnostic. I am a Jesuit. I would love to go one on one with you in a test of theology. Even the Pope agreed with Steven Hawking on the theory of the "Big Bang" saying that Creation was exactly the essence of the phrase " Let there be light ! " And then as a admonishment told Him: Go no further.

It seems that, although we have always been told it's Alpha Centauri, it's the Alpha Centauri "system" of three stars, of which Proxima Centauri is closest. Learned something today. (And to think I was so confident of my answer. Oh, well...)

Alpha Centauri is a star system with three orbiting stars, Alpha Centauri A, Alpha Centauri B, And Proxima Centauri. Of the Three, Proxima Centauri is the closest at 4.24 lt years, Whie the Binaries Components, Alpha Centauri A and Alpha Centauri B, lie 4.37 lt years away.
