What is the name of this famous luxury liner?

Three years before Titanic on January 24, 1909, another palatial and "unsinkable" White Star Line passenger liner sank 50 miles off the coast of Nantucket. The RMS Republic was one of the largest and most luxurious liners of those times. She sank in 270 feet of shark infested water. Her loss generated the greatest legend in lost-treasure lore. The amount of wealth lost is beyond most people's imagination. Today, the treasure is estimated to be worth more than $1.5 BILLION dollars!

The Republic left New York at 3 p.m. on Friday, January 22, 1909. In the early morning hours of January 23rd, she collided in a dense fog with the in-bound immigrant ship SS Florida. The Republic lost all engine, steam and electrical power. She did still have some secondary battery power for the use of her recently installed wireless telegraph.

More than 1,5 thousand people were rescued from the liner. Six people (3 passengers and 3 crewmen) died directly from the collision.

Michele Palamidy, The Queen Mary is the ship in Long Beach California. The poor QE 1 ended up burning In Hong Kong Harber in 1972

Tom Knox, The flag on the forward mast tells you what country the ship is going too. There would be a flag on the Stern (back) of the ship of the country the ship is from RMS (Royal Mail Ship) British. On the way back to England that American flag would be replaced with a British Flag. On some pictures of the Titanic, you can see an American flag also on the forward mast. I hope that explains that well enough.

Ian Swindale, I like to look for info about questions like you asked, so I went online to find what I could.. Capt. Martin Bayerle found the Republic at 270 ft (82 m), in 1981 and spent years in court, finally getting the right to salvage in 2011. Late in 2020, he finally proceeded to bring artifacts and gold (possibly now worth about $7 billion). So you can find details on line should you desire to do so.
