Naruto began as a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Masashi Kishimoto. The story is an adventurous coming of age story revolving around Naruto Uzumaki, a young ninja who seeks recognition and dreams of becoming the leader of his village. It's not an easy goal though with being a village outcast and doing poorly in his classes. Along the way he meets all sorts of people, some friends and some being fearsome enemies.

The show including the sequel, Naruto Shippuden, ran for 15 years and ended in 2017. The series also spawned eleven spinoff movies, 12 original video animations, merchandise, video games and even trading cards.

At Naruto's peak the series dominated a lot of the anime industry. It's the fourth best selling manga series in history having 250 million copies in circulation worldwide in 47 countries and regions, with 135 million copies in Japan alone. The English translated volumes sold by Viz Media appeared on USA Today and The New York Times bestseller list several times.

Reviewers praised the character development, strong storylines, and well-executed fight scenes.
