In Quentin Tarantino’s 2019 film “Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood”, one of the film’s protagonists, Cliff Booth (played by Brad Pitt), is the proud owner of a very well disciplined dog, an American pit bull which goes by the name of Brandy in the movie. Even though only one dog (named Sayuri) is credited with playing Brandy, it was actually three dogs who portrayed Cliff's loyal companion — two females and a "more aggressive" male dog for the film's graphically violent finale. The Brandy part in the film secured the movie’s only award at Cannes: the “Palm Dog Award”.

Brandy’s role is a reprise of the heroic roles that canine ‘actors’ such as Lassie and Rin Tin Tin played in rescuing their human companions from various dangerous situations. A lot of what gives Brandy great appeal is the way in which Tarantino captures her on film; close-ups of her many facial expressions while capturing the many other ways in which dogs communicate - every last impatient grunt and an ecstatic wag of the tail.
