Only electrons flow as electric current. An atom is made of a core of positive particles (protons) usually orbited by an equal number of negative particles (electrons). Ions are atoms with extra electrons (negative ions) or less electrons (positive ions).
A charged battery has one terminal connected to a supply of positive ions and the other terminal connected to a supply of negative ions. When an electric circuit is completed, electrons from the negative ions flow through the conductor to the positive ions to bring both to a neutral state (where the number of electrons in the atom equals the number of electrons, and the battery is now 'flat").
1 ampere is equal to a flow of an electrical charge of 1 Coulomb per second where a Coulomb is the electrical charge on 6,230,000,000,000,000,000 electrons.
