Fencing is a combat sport done by using three types of swords: the foil, the épée, and the sabre. Points are given whenever the weapon makes contact with an opponent. The first to score fifteen points win.

Foil fencing was included for the first time at the 1896 Games in Athens, and has remained on the Olympic programme since then. In 1900 the épée joined the foil and sabre as individual events. Team competition in the foil was introduced in the 1904 games, followed by the sabre and épée in 1908.

The women's fencing competition entered the Games in 1924 in Paris. Individual foil for women was first included in the 1924 Olympic Games, and a team event for women was introduced in the 1960 Games. Women’s team and individual épée made their Olympic debut in the 1996 Games. The women’s individual sabre event was added in the 2004 Olympic Games, and the women’s team sabre event was added in the 2008 Games.

Competitive fencing is now one of the five activities which have been featured in every modern Olympic Games, the other four being athletics, cycling, swimming, and gymnastics.
