What language was spoken in the Carthaginian empire?

Carthage was founded by Phoenician migrants, and spoke a Phoenician dialect called Punic, Carthage and Rome fought three (I think) Wars these were known as the Punic Wars. They were no more Greek than I am.

According to the Roman poet, Virgil, in his epic poem, "Aeneid", this is where some of the remnants of the Trojans escaped at the end of the 10-year war with Greece. Prince Aeneas, who led them fell in love with Carthage's queen, Dido, who took the trojans into her protection. The 19th Century French composer, Hector Berlioz, based his two-part, five-act opera, "Les Trouens", on the Aeneid. The 17th Century English composer also composed an opera based on this called "Dido & Aeneas".

Now we know why they were called the " Punic Wars "

Ray Lister, Arabic did not become the language of Egypt until the 7th century. Prior to that, Egyptian and Greek were the main languages of the Nile Valley.

Susanna Viljanen, not alone are all Semitic languages NOT mutually comprehensible but many dialects of Arabic are so mutually incomprehensible as to be regarded by many as separate languages in their own right.

The modern Karthago is a suburb to Tunis and has around 17,000 citizens. They have a map with all the known archaelogical places.
