What makes a plant a perennial?
Perennial plants are planted and then come back on their own. Some come back every spring and biennials come back every other year. Annuals are planted and die at the end of the growing season. They must be replaced every year because they do not come back on their own. On occasion an annual if left to seed on the ground may grow again next year but only due to the seeds dropping not from the root system.

A weed is just a plant in the wrong place! :-) My girls are excellent weed gardeners, as they love blowing on Dandelion seed heads so I end up with them all over my lawn!

situations, We aren't likely to have cows or horses in our backyard, I'll never own a dog, and tough luck for the rabbits

John W Shreve, I have Lantana also, they are beautiful and easy. Different with the Leucaena and common weeds.

John W Shreve, Lantana is considered a weed plant and removed in areas with cattle and horses, as it is toxic to many animals (including rabbits and dogs). Luckily our dogs are fed well enough not to bother nibbling on our plants! :-)

Joris van Pelt, I lucked out. The wind blew some seeds into my yard from the desert that turned out to be beautiful lantanas.
