Danny Powell You raise a valid point. The fact is, Poe was born in Boston, MA, worked in many US cities including Philadelphia, PA, New York, NY, and Baltimore, MD where he also died. He was without a doubt, an American author. The fact that he wrote in English in no way makes him an English author, any more than Gabriel Garcia Marquez who lived in Colombia would be considered a Spanish author simply because he wrote in Spanish. The use of such adjectives describes the country they called home, not the language in which they wrote. This description of Poe as an English author is in error and should never have passed scrutiny.

William Laughlin, I don't know if you're aware of a possible change that might have been made. From my viewpoint, now years later, it looks like Poe was referred to as English which caused someone to assume that he wasn't an American author. The end of the author's explanation is now saying that he was American..

Robert Wayman First, because she is spoken of, she is the second person in the poem. Second, do not confuse the poem with the movie, since the poem does not mention or feature other male characters.

I will whine (not really) and say I was nine in 1963. I spent most of my childhood and adolescent years with my nose stuck in a book. That didn't leave much time for movies or television, although I did manage occasionally. Poe is one of my favorite AMERICAN authors. Aside: somehow his family is in my wife's ancestry. The research they rely on was hired.

William Laughlin The bird bit was meant to be a joke. The only person present in the poem is the narrator; Lenore is "lost". I suppose the movie could have showed her in a flashback, but who would have played her, Karloff, Lorre?

Robert Wayman You are correct on one point. There are indeed, two people in the poem, but the bird isn't one of them, largely because a bird is not a person. The two people are Lenore and the narrator.
