If someone had said say 5 years before it happened, that the Wall would come down and Communism would fail they might have been derided.

The old Soviet Union, which was an ally in WW2, never posed a military threat to the United States. As such, the Cold War was a totally contrived event similar to the War on Terror that replaced it. Beginning in the late 1930s (to escape the Great Depression) the economy of the United States became increasingly dependent on huge defense spending outlays that require real or imaginary enemies created when and as needed.
