Thomas Earl Petty (10/20/1950-10/2/2017 Gainesville, Florida) was an American singer, songwriter, musician, record producer, and actor. He was the lead vocalist and guitarist of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, formed in 1976. He previously was a member of the late 1980s supergroup the Traveling Wilburys under the name, Charlie T. Wilbury Jr.

Petty's gentres include, rock, heartland rock, blues rock, and Southern rock. Some of his associated act s include Bob Dylan and Stevie Nicks among others.

Petty recorded a number of hit singles with the Heartbreakers, including "Don't do me Like That" (1979). He became a solo act and recorded hits like "Learning to Fly" and "Free Falling". In his career, he has sold 80 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling music artist of all times. Tom Petty and Heartbreakers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.

On the morning of October 2, 2017, Petty was found unconscious at his home in Santa Monica, California. Petty had struggled with a heroin addiction from roughly 1996 through 1999. He blamed the emotional pain from his divorce from Jane Benyo, whom he had married in 1974 and divorced in 1996, as the major contributing cause for his addiction. His family stated later that, "he had a fractured hip, and he had been prescribed opioids for the discomfort".

On January 19, 2018, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner announced Petty had died from accidental mixed polypharmacy overdose.
