Pocahontas' father's name was Wahunsenacawh, although he is most commonly known as Powhatan. Her birth name was Matoaka Amonute. She was most commonly referred to as Pocahontas, which means, "Playful One." The traditional name of the Native American wasn't supposed to be used outside of the village, because some villages felt that it held magical properties that would be lost if used too much and to the wrong people. It was also easier for the Englishmen to pronounce Pocahontas. Therefore, that is her most common name.

Matachanna is the one of the well known of Pocahontas' siblings. She is the older sister that took the place of her mother when she passed too soon to take Pocahontas back to her village with her, as was their tradition. Matachanna basically became a mother to the girl when she was just an infant.

Parahunt's traditional name was Taux. He was a son of Powhatan that was born about twenty years before Pocahontas, and died a year after her in 1618. Not much is known about him, except that he is the brother of Pocahontas.

Tomoco is a son of Powhatan who was born around the same time as Parahunt. Again, not much is known about him. His original name is unknown. He was born around the same time that Parahunt was and died an average of five years after Pocahontas was born.
