Woodrow Tracy Harrelson (7/23/1961 Midland, Texas) is an American actor and playwright. He is the recipient of several accolades, including a Primetime Emmy Award and two Screen Actors Guild Awards, in addition to nominations for three Academy Awards and four Golden Globe Awards.

Harrelson first became known for his role as bartender Woody Boyd on the NBC sitcom 'Cheers' (1985-1993)

Woody was the son of secretary Diane and convicted felon Norman Charles House Harrelson (7/23/1938-3/15/2007) who was an American hitman and organized crime figure. He was convicted of assassinating federal judge John H. Wood Jr. (3/31/1916-5/29/1979), the first federal judge to be killed in the 20th century.

His father was also tried for the murder of Alan Harry Burg but was acquitted. Harrelson was tried, with the trial ending in a deadlock, in 1968 for the murder-for-hire killing of Texas grain dealer, Sam Degelia. He was retried for the same crime and was found guilty in 1973 and was given a 15 year prison sentence.

Woody Harrelson has stated that his father was rarely around during his childhood. Charles, his father, died in the US Penitentiary, Administrative Maximum Facility in Fremont County near Florence, Colorado on 3/15/2007) from a myocardial infarction.
