What was the first printed book in English?

The first book printed in English was a translation of a French romance. Its Modern English name would sound as A Collection of the Histories of Troy, and the original name of the book wasRecuyell of the Historyes of Troye. Recuyell (recueil in Modern French) simply means "collection" in English.

The romance was translated by William Caxton, a person widely known as the first English printer in history. He was a merchant and diplomat, who also worked as an author. He is still considered one of the most prominent figures of the English history.

The book, which became the first one to be printed, was not only translated, but printed by Caxton as well. Nowadays 18 copies of the famous book exist, and the last one sold cost more than £1,000,000.
