Lucian Michael Freud (1922-2011) was a British-German painter, who specialised in painting the human form. He was born in Berlin but moved with his family to England in 1933 to escape from the Nazis. Six years later, he officially became a British citizen. He was the grandson of Sigmund Freud, the founding father of psychoanalysis. Rather than following in his grandfather's footsteps, he chose to study art.

Lucian Freud primarily painted portraits, which many described as brutally honest. He rarely tried to make people look good and often painted them nude. Freud prefered to use an impasto technique, layering up several levels of paint, and blending greens, greys and purples with pink to suggest skin color.

Freud was a popular artist in the 1960's, but almost disappeared in the 1970s. His popularity returned after an exhibition in 1987. One of his most successful paintings was 'Benefits Supervisor Sleeping', which featured a fat female nude asleep on a sofa. It sold for US$33.6 million in 2008, which at the time was the most ever paid for a painting by a living artist.
