Ida was the ninth named storm, fourth hurricane, and second major hurricane of the 2021 Atlantic hurricane season, Ida developed on August 26 in the western Caribbean Sea. It was the second most intense hurricane to strike the U.S. state of Louisiana on record, only behind Hurricane Katrina.

Ida developed in the Caribbean Sea as a Category 2 hurricane on Saturday, August 28, 2021, but the storm rapidly strengthened as it moved toward the Louisiana coast turning into a Category 4 hurricane.

On August 29, Ida made landfall near Port Fourchon, Louisiana, with sustained winds of 150 mph (240 km/h) and a central pressure of 930 mbar (27.46 inHg), tying the 1856 Last Island hurricane and Hurricane Laura as the strongest landfalling hurricane on record in Louisiana, as measured by maximum sustained wind, and trailing only Hurricane Katrina, as measured by central pressure at landfall.

Following landfall, Ida weakened slowly at first, remaining a dangerous major hurricane. As the storm moved further inland, Ida began to rapidly weaken. On August 30, Ida weakened into a depression, as it moved further inland. The system degenerated to a post-tropical cyclone two days later, as it moved over the central Appalachian Mountains.
