Kwai Chang Caine (played by David Carradine) in the US TV series "Kung Fu" received the nickname "Grasshopper" from Master Po while as a student at a Shaolin monastery. The nickname was established in the pilot TV movie, that also established the premise of the series.

The pilot show "Kung Fu: The Way of the Tiger, The Sign of the Dragon" first aired in 1972, sets the show in the American West in the 1870s. After completing his training at the Shaolin monastery, Caine fled China to the United States for killing the nephew of the Emperor of China because the nephew had, in turn, killed Caine's mentor, Master Po. His travels through the Western US is in part to flee those searching for him for murder and looking for his half brother, Daniel. The show's episodes focus on his travelling and his encounters, with numerous flashbacks to his childhood while at the monastery. Flashbacks are used to draw from past experiences to aid in his current predicament.

"Kung Fu" aired in the United States between 1972 and 1975 for 3 seasons. Several spin-off shows and a movie were created in the 1980s and 1990s.
