What were bagpipes historically used for?
Originally used to scare off enemies on the battlefield, the bagpipe is the only musical instrument that was ever deemed a weapon of war. Considering the instrument's more musical purpose today, it's safe to say that bagpipes have come a long way.
Along with a different purpose, the historical pipes also had quite a different look.
While pipes today are often made from artificial fabric, the original instruments were made from the whole skin of a sheep. The skin was often turned inside out and pipes placed where the arms and legs once were.
