The Canadian penny, reached peak production in 2006 when more than 1.26 billion pennies were minted. The last penny was minted in Winnipeg on May 4, 2012.

Ottawa estimated that it lost $11 million a year producing and distributing the penny, not including the costs and frustrations for businesses and consumers that use them in transactions.

The Royal Canadian Mint ceased distributing them as of February 4, 2013. However, like all discontinued currency in the Canadian monetary system, the coin remains legal tender.
