An Arabian chief (or emir) Muhammad bin Saud Al Muqrin was leader of a community named Diriyah, near present-day Riyahd, Saudi Arabia, formed an alliance with religious leader Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab beginning in 1744, their intent was to unify the various states on the Arabian Peninsula under rule by bin Saud. Over a period of years, territory from present-day Kuwait, down the eastern coast to Oman came under control of this social and religious alliance. Following Muhammad bin Saud's death in 1765, his son led the emirate to take control of cities in Hejaz (western area of the peninsula), this region included the Islamic holy cities of Mecca and Medina, The Ottoman Empire fought to take back control of the holy cities, crushing the Emirate following a siege of Diriyah in 1818.

The followers of al-Wahhab (known as the Wahabbi sect) and surviving members of the Al Saud clan, continued their alliance that led to a second Saudi State that lasted between 1824 and 1891, and the current Saudi State, Saudi Arabia, formed in 1932.
