When were floppy disks first developed?

Nicole Toma-Tolman, The question refers to 8" floppies, these were replaced by 5. 25" floppies , 3.5" floppies, CD-RW, DVD-RW, flash drives and SSDs over the years. The first commercial 3.5' floppy was introduced around 1984, and were largely obsolete by the mid to late 90s.

Vaguely remember these from the eighties.

teresab, as per the question, they were not the first floppy disks.

They were a big improvement over the 5 1/2" floppy.

I went by the picture, which showed what were still called floppy disks. So...although I was going to say the 60's I used the photo and said '90s. Oh, well. This picture gave me the wrong 1000 words!

the picture were of the hard component of the Floppy disc, in South Africa they were call Stiffy's and the soft were the floppy's and then we also used the Magnetic tape which i think is still being used.

Paul de Serres, the early ones were very floppy, thin black card protecting it. The later ones were protected by plastic, but were very floppy inside

Didn't know they started in thev50s, but knew it was before the 90s. Thought the 80s.

Worked floppy discs up to 1980s.

The picture was confusing. Knew it was the 60's.

Of course it was the 60s, they measured about a foot across and held almost nothing. TGF the ic chip.
