Where are your tonsils?

The tonsils are a set of lymphoid organs facing into the aerodigestive tract, which is known as Waldeyer's tonsillar ring and consists of the adenoid tonsil, two tubal tonsils, two palatine tonsils, and the lingual tonsils. These organs play an important role in the immune system.

When used unqualified, the term most commonly refers specifically to the palatine tonsils, which are two lymphoid organs situated at either side of the back of the human throat. The palatine tonsils and the adenoid tonsil are organs consisting of lymphoepithelial tissue located near the oropharynx and nasopharynx (parts of the throat).

My tonsils were taken out when I was young. I have no idea where they are today!!!

In the 50s and 60s many four year Olds had their tonsils removed. It was their first hospital experience and a memorable one.

Player, Me too, they told me I'd get ice cream after the surgery but it hurt too badly. My Dad give me a pair of cute white mice if I was good in hospital but my Mom got rid of them 2 weeks later, ugh. They were so cute.🐾

If there is any tissue left after a tonsillectomy then the tonsil/s will grow bac - although not to their original size. The UK and the USA stopped removing them in the 1970s when the operation was found to be largely unnecessary. Incidentally, I was born in 1954 and still have mine.

I had mine taken out when I was 14. It was much more traumatic than when it is done at a younger age.

I had strep throat or tonsillitis once or twice a year in junior high and high school, but the doctor never wanted to remove them. So I still have all my tonsils, and I'm almost 65! 😁
