Where did the word "selfie" originate?
A selfie is a self-portrait photograph, typically taken with a digital camera or camera phone held in the hand or supported by a so-called selfie stick, which has recently became a popular device.
The earliest usage of the word selfie can be traced as far back as 2002. It first appeared in Karl Kruszelnicki's 'Dr Karl Self-Serve Science Forum', an Australian internet forum (ABC Online) on the 13th of September, 2002.
Nowadays the word "selfie" is widely used both online and in the real life.

If my memory is correct, the Guardian named selfie as their word of the year about 20 years ago. Calling it an Australian slang term.
