Gooseberries are the edible fruit produced from gooseberry bushes. These berries are derived mostly from two species: the European gooseberry and the American gooseberry. Gooseberry bushes are 3 to 4 feet (1m to 1.3m) high. They are spiny and produce greenish to greenish pink flowers in clusters of two or three. The oval berries are white, red, yellow, or green with a prickly, hairy, or smooth surface.

They are not to be confused with other fruits of the name "gooseberry" that don't fall under the horticultural classification of true berries, including cape gooseberries and Chinese gooseberries (also known as kiwi).
