A somewhat different type of sandwich; bunny chow is a unique, portable and popular South African street food that exemplifies the natural fusion of South African cuisine. A highly spiced curry is usually used to flavour the filling. It is made with some sort of protein: beef, lamb, chicken, beans and/or vegetables. Served in a hollowed out bread bowl or -loaf, makes it even more appealing for carb lovers and designed to keep you going as it is high in calories.

The dish has its origins in Durban, South Africa's third-largest city. "It's not known by Indian communities outside of South Africa," says Rajend Mesthrie, a linguist at the University of Cape Town who has looked into its history. There are only a handful of places in the U.S. where you can order bunny chow.

In this case, the term bunny is derived from the word “Bania“, an Indian class of traders who sold this tasty street food and "chow" which is slang for food, mostly from the South African City of Durban.
