Where is Emperor Franz Joseph I buried?

Franz Joseph I or Francis Josef I (18 August 1830 – 21 November 1916) was Emperor of Austria, King of Hungary, King of Bohemia, and monarch of many other states of the Austro-Hungarian Empire from 2 December 1848 to his death at the Schönbrunn Palace, at the age of 86. He is buried in the Imperial Crypt of the Capuchin Crypt (Kapuzinergruft), which is a burial chamber beneath the Capuchin Church and monastery in Vienna, Austria.

The Capuchin Crypt was founded in 1618 and dedicated in 1632. It is located on the Neuer Markt square of the Innere Stadt, near the Hofburg Palace. Since 1633, its Imperial Crypt serves as the principal place of entombment for the members of the House of Habsburg. Some of the dozen resident Capuchin friars continue their customary role as the guardians and caretakers of the crypt, along with their other pastoral work in Vienna.

By 1908 the seven vaults of the crypt already held 129 bodies, plus the heart urns of another three persons. In that year the “Franz Joseph Gruft” was built, along with the adjacent chapel, as part of the celebrations of Emperor Franz Joseph's 60 years on the throne. Franz Joseph’s mausoleum is flanked by his wife’s, Empress Elisabeth of Bavaria, known as “Sisi” and their son’s, Archduke Rudolf.
