Fort Drum is a census-designated place and U.S. Army military reservation in Jefferson County, New York, United States. The population was 12,955 at the 2010 census. It is home to the 10th Mountain Division.

Fort Drum consists of 107,265 acres and temperatures drop as low as -30 degrees. Its mission includes command of active component units assigned to the installation, provide administrative and logistical support to tenant units, support to tenant units, support to active and reserve units from all services in training at Fort Drum, and planning and support for the mobilization and training of almost 80,000 troops annually.

Kath Thomson, being a USA citizen doesn’t help with such a specialized question. I doubt very many in the US can answer it. I don’t think it qualifies as a geography question.

earlepg, it gets very cold. I'm from MN so it's very familiar to me. I was an army wife and lived there for 5 years. The snow was unlike anything I've experienced though - all 5 great lakes that led up to that area. Also, it was easier and faster to go to Canada than Syracuse which was straight south about an hour... Middle of nowhere...

The thought that it was in America did not help me, an American, with this particular question, because although I have heard of it, I did not know its location. There’s four military bases within a stones throw of where I live, battalions, squadrons, naval reconnaissance units, it’s a bazaar proposition to ask someone to identify an obscure force without at least stating which country the author is quizzing over.

Fort Drum, where the 10th Mountain Division is, is in a rural area near New York State's border with Canada. Apparently it can get very cold there. (My second double chance pick.) Fort Carson, where the 10th Mountain Division isn't, is in the Rocky Mountains near Colorado Springs, Colorado and Fort Hood. (My first double chance pick.)

When I returned from South Korea in 1971, I went on temporary duty to Camp Drum NY from Ft.Belvoir VA training 10th, 42 Rainbow Division and New York Yankee Division among others
