Where is the Gulf of Tonkin?

The Gulf of Tonkin (19°45′N 107°45′E) is a body of water located off the coast of northern Vietnam and southern China. It is a northern arm of the South China Sea. The Gulf is defined in the west by the northern coastline of Vietnam, in the north by China's Guangxi province, and to the east by China's Leizhou Peninsula and Hainan Island.

The usa faked a couple of attacks of its ships in the gulf of Tonkin and used it to justify full involvement in Vietnam conflict/police action .The result was millions of not billions of dollars for usa war machine. Who knows how lives paid for it. untold suffering .Same as now

The Gulf of Tonkin was where a brief confrontation between the USA and North Vietnamese wars took place in 1964, which triggered greater USA involvement in Vietnam. Strange it wasn't mentioned by the commentator. Not really much information about the area, someone needs to do more research.

Tonkin Gulf brings up memories. I was on an aircraft carrier from 1966 to 1968. We were over there for two separate tours.
