The Lab is situated in a place which is a former gold mine. The deep mine is located in Lead, South Dakota and until 2002 (the year of its closure) the mine was the American deepest (and the biggest as well) gold mine.

The first researches in the mine were held in 1960. That time the mine was used as a laboratory for solar neutrino studies.

The depth of the mine was one of the most attractive characteristics for researchers as this fact allowed them to hold complex experiments.

In 2011, scientists gained the full access to the Lab to do new researches.
