Joan Armatrading (born 1950) is a singer-songwriter and guitarist from the town of Basseterre in what was then the British colony of Saint Christopher and Nevis. Today, the country is called Saint Kitts and Nevis. Armatrading is a three-time Grammy Award nominee and received an Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Contemporary Song Collection in 1996.

When Armatrading was three years old, her parents moved to Birmingham in England, and sent her to live with her grandmother on the island of Antigua. In 1958, she joined her parents in Birmingham.

At 16, Armatrading first performed in a concert at Birmingham University, at the request of her brother at the age of about 16. She chose to sing 'The Sound of Silence'. After this, she started performing her own songs at various local locations.

In 1968 Armatrading joined a touring production of the stage musical 'Hair'. While touring, she met the lyricist Pam Nestor, who helped her release her debut album 'Whatever's for Us' in 1972. Armatrading has been releasing singles and albums ever since, with her 20th studio album 'Consequences' releasing in late 2021.

Armatrading entered into a civil partnership with artist Maggie Butler in 2011. In general, she is not very open about her personal life.
